Prof Pape on Breaking Points: Why the Iran War is Heating Up
Yesterday I joined Breaking Points to discuss why we are seeing escalation in multiple fronts in the Iran war – from Hormuz to Israel/Lebanon to new Houthi threats against Red Sea shipping
The most important change in the Iran War is this:
For the first hundred days, Iran’s overriding objective was survival.
Now Iran is moving from survival to ambition. If Iran gains regional primacy, this would represent a massive strategic defeat for Trump and Netanyahu – which they cannot accept.
This is the logic of the Escalation Trap playing out in real time.
This shift helps explain why the battlefield is expanding rather than contracting, why negotiations continue to stall, and why I believe the conflict is entering what chess players would recognize as the middle game rather than the endgame.
Earlier, the mechanism of the Escalation Trap gave advance warning that bombing alone would not collapse the regime.
Then, warning that regime survival itself would create geopolitical leverage.
Now I believe we are seeing the next stage emerge: where leverage is turning into ambition.
The next place I am watching is not Tehran.
It is the Red Sea.
Below is my conversation with Breaking Points.
